Babiana sambucina is a cormous perennial with the stem mostly underground, 5-15 cm high. Leaves strap or narrowly lance-shaped, pleated and hairy. Flowers funnel-shaped with a long straight tube, 30-50 mm long, mauve to violet with white and sometimes red markings, fragrant, the inner bracts forked at the tips.
